San Pedro de Atacama, Chile – Redux

Though we had originally had a great time in San Pedro de Atacama we had been there during the middle of the moon phase. There were also some hard to reach areas we were keen to see. Sadly, the prices of accommodations in town were beyond what we were willing to pay so we employed one of our classic maneuvers – sleep in the rental car!

This turned out to be both a brilliant and miserable strategy. It allowed us to enjoy every sunrise and sunset to the fullest. It removed the barriers for us to roam at night and enjoy the incredible stars. However, it was COLD! Not just a little cold but well below freezing cold. Though we had good sleeping bags that kept us safe, sleeping in a reclined seat next to a window is not a recipe for great circulation. Over the course of the three nights we spent this way I would wake up about every two hours and turn the car on to get some heat. It worked, barely, but it was totally worth it.
